So that emissions in the household can be correctly calculated and broken down to you, it is important to state the people in the household and the size of the apartment.

heater
0%

For example, the household of an apartment with 70 square meters in Germany consumes an average of 7,800 kWh and thus emits around 2.3 tons of CO₂ on average

However, the average CO₂ emissions from heating behavior depend on the renovation status of the building, the installed heating system and the individual heating behavior and can therefore fluctuate widely.

electricity
0%

For example, a 2-person household in an apartment building in Germany consumes an average of 2,500 kWh per year and thus emits around 1.3 tons of CO₂.

Electricity consumption in the household is mainly driven by large electricity consumers (e.g. refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, air conditioning units, electric radiators, etc.). A major consumption driver for these devices is age, since the energy efficiency generally decreases with increasing age. But the total consumption also increases due to the sum of small devices such as computers, kitchen appliances, hi-fi systems, etc.

So if many of the devices mentioned as examples are already older, you can assume a “high” consumption. If you have modern devices with a high efficiency class on average, you can assume average consumption. If you do not own many of the devices or if you only use them very consciously, you can assume low consumption.

Consumption of products (e.g. clothing, electronics, books, etc.) and services (e.g. leisure and cultural offers, entertainment, etc.) emit in some cases high CO2 emissions through general provision, production, packaging, transport and disposal. The calculation of individual consumer goods is complex and in some cases almost impossible due to non-transparent value creation stages.

Here we calculate an averaged value, which is based on your monthly consumer spending and is influenced by your buying behavior. Buying used items leads to fewer emissions, as no new product has to be produced. If attention is paid to longevity, an article does not have to be disposed of and bought again as quickly, which in turn reduces CO₂ emissions.
